Where Is The Middle Class Going!
And Where is Engineering Going!
I might be inclined to say 'to H double l in a handbasket'. I look at the state of our manufacturing in the US today and I despair. I look at the steadily decreasing number of good jobs available and I despair.
I shudder at the difficulty of finding an job in engineering. Particularly for older engineers. I know of several very good engineers who are trapped in their existing jobs. There is just not much opportunity out there. Oh, I know there are some who say that this is a bunch of whooee but I think that those people are the one's who are full of whooee.
When there are engineering jobs available, they seem to be very narrowly specified -'...needs to use this or that CAD program...', etc. I am an engineer, folks, I know how to do a bunch of things and I learned, over my career, how to do other things. I started when tubes were in and transistors were the new thing, when uP were not even thought of. I loved (and still do) engineering - the creation of something. But today, if I was looking for a job, I would have a devil of a time finding one. And if I did, I would probably have to move.
Yes, I despair. Not for me (I'm retired) but for those who follow me.
